Job Title: Freelance Artist and Adjunct Professor at University of Hartford
Committee Member On: Personal & Professional Development Committee
What she does for work:
At this point I do a lot of things for work! I teach an interdisciplinary course at UHart called “Creativity: The Dynamics of Artistic Expression”. I love setting the stage for my students to become engaged in the creative process. They are mostly non-art majors so it’s so inspiring to see how they surprise themselves and how they find creativity in their own ways.
I also work as a freelance artist and illustrator which means making personal work as well as commissioned work, and selling my work on my website, at art markets and at local shops. I focus mostly on custom illustrated recipes and other food illustrations.
Where she sees herself in 5 to 10 years:
I see myself getting an MFA in Illustration so I can learn more about the professional side of being an illustrator and so that I can keep teaching at the college level. I’d also like to have my work published in books and magazines. A big dream of mine is to partner with a chef or restaurant and illustrate a cookbook!
What she loves about Hartford and this region:
I love the creative energy here. There are a lot of people working to make new and exciting things. I am always inspired to see how people re-purpose spaces, collaborate and find new ways to bring people together. I think HYPE is a really good catalyst for that as well.
What book she is currently reading:
I recently read “Such a Fun Age”, a novel by Kiley Reid. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who likes a good story and especially if you’re like me, trying to figure out adulthood. I have also been reading “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat” by Samin Nosrat (there’s also a Netflix show about it). It’s a cookbook but the author insists you have to read it from beginning to end. It’s also illustrated by Wendy Macnaughton and her work is lovely!
