How to Manage Stress for YP's

On Monday, June 23rd, Walt Hampton is coming to Hartford to talk to HYPEsters about how to manage stress in our lives and to make sure we’re all getting the most out of what we do. (Register here for HYPEd on Stress Management, 6-8pm on June 23rd.) I’ve found that our generation tends to get involved in a lot – whether it be at work on different projects, or in the community on nonprofits boards and committees, all while nurturing our own hobbies and interests.

I find that sometimes I look at my calendar and realize I’ve booked myself into doing something every weekend for months, and end up taking very little time for myself. And as HYPE Program Director, managing about 100 amazing volunteers and overseeing 60+ super fun events a year can be a bit stressful. So if you’re someone like me who has trouble managing stress, you should come hear Walt speak. I know of more than one HYPEster who has heard Walt in the past, and they all have nothing but complimentary things to say about his presentations.

With this event coming up, it got us thinking in the office about how we each manage stress. Read our tips below, come hear Walt on June 23rd, and feel free to share your own stress management tips with us below!

“My absolute favorite way to manage my stress is to eat ice cream. Who doesn’t love ice cream? But I will say that the most effective way I manage stress is to burn energy – whether it be mountain biking or going to the gym, I always feel better once I’ve disconnected for a bit.” – Laura

“I’m a big believer in exercise and have read that 21 minutes or more can truly impact your mood. As such, I walk 30-45 minutes a day and find that helps me to decompress. I also think lifting weights vigorously is a big help. And I also like looking at mind numbing videos on YouTube. Don’t we all?” – Rich

I'm really excited to hear Walt speak not only for the stress management tips, but also just because he's a super cool person. He is a high-altitude mountaineer, adventure photographer, blue water sailor, and ultra-distance runner.
