Hanging Out With HYPE - 4th Annual Boogie for Books

Mar 14, 2019

ELS LogoUnited Way Emerging Leaders (ELS) supports education initiatives within the Hartford region throughout the year with its Beyond the Bell after-school volunteer opportunities which introduce coding and STEM-related activities to students.

ELS is constantly raising the bar on excitement and challenging its participants with remarkable events to raise funds and awareness for these impactful programs. This year ELS held its first decathlon, essentially a 12-hour gym crawl, in which brave participants pushed themselves physically for a good cause. The Emerging Leaders steering committee also joined forces to race the Hartford Marathon Relay.

ELS social and leadership activities culminate into their signature fundraiser event of Boogie for Books dancethe year “Boogie for Books” which is a fun dance party on April 27th from 7:00-11:00pm at Chrysalis Center that is not to be missed!  Don’t worry if you have two left feet, the entertaining DJ leads interactive games that gets everyone participating. Last year, we all danced the infamous Thriller, and Krishna Parekh also taught everyone a Bollywood Dance. There is something for everyone. Someone even broke out into a traditional Russian Kazotsky, while others did a massively long conga line! This year’s theme is black and white, so come dressed to impress and prepared for an exciting time! There will be drawings, a wine&beer pull, performances, food, cash bar, and music!

You can buy a ticket or a join a team to raise money!  If you raise at least $75, your ticket is covered. All funds raised will directly benefit “Summer Starts”, a United Way initiative that provides children with meals and educational summer programming to prevent summer learning loss. Students who do not participate in quality summer programs may fall behind three grade levels by the time they reach 5th grade! Summer Smarts provides funding to 16 local nonprofits in support of 23 high-quality summer learning programs. In 2018, 76% of 2,800 students served maintained or improved reading proficiency.  Help us reach 3,000 students in 2019.
