Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Mar 20, 2019

United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut has been a proud supporter of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) since 2003, and MyFreeTaxes since 2008.

In 2018, more than 500 volunteers helped 12,267 taxpayers in United Way’s 40-town region receive $28 million in refunds and credits through VITA and MyFreeTaxes.com.

Funding free tax preparation services is one way United Way and its partners help working families become financially secure. If you qualify, there are two ways to file your taxes fast and free.

Get help from an IRS-certified volunteer

If your household is in Greater Hartford and Windham County and household income is up to $55,000, dial 2-1-1 and press ‘3’ then ‘6’ for an appointment or sign up online at www.211ct.org. United Way 2-1-1 is a free, multilingual information and referral hotline, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For a free tax site in New Britain, call 860-612-3983. The average savings is $200 or more in tax preparation fees, and refunds can be expected in 7-1odays. Be sure to ask about other financial resources and savings opportunities to help you grow your refund.

File on your own online

If your household income is up to $66,000, prepare and file your taxes at MyFreeTaxes.com. Online help is available 24/7 and a tax preparation checklist is also available online.

VITA sites are open during convenient times, including evenings and weekends, from now until April 17. Free tax assistance is available in Spanish and/or Polish at select sites. The local VITA and MyFreeTaxes Campaign is supported by United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, in partnership with City of Hartford, Community Accounting Aid and Services, Human Resources Agency of New Britain, Inc., Internal Revenue Service, The Village for Families & Children, as well as many other municipal and community providers.
